Works on Paper

Most of my career as an artist has been spent exploring the possibilities of paper. I love the surface of paper, sometimes rough, sometimes smooth, at times resistant, at other times absorbent. I remember the excitement of opening a roll of Arches watercolour paper, feeling the tooth under my hand and spreading the pigment over it - for those moments it became my world.

I still use Arches paper, layering the surface with watercolour, acrylic and pastel, the drips and stains creating their own momentum, sometimes asking me to draw into them with pastel and chalk. Alternately aggressive , expressive, gentle and subtle, the marks and gestures build up colour and texture to create new possibilities and help me explore my moods.
