My Ongoing Relationship with Landscape

Every year I go to Wilson’s Promontory, a National Park on the Southernmost portion of the Australian mainland. It’s an area of great natural beauty with granite boulders, windswept beaches and wild rivers.

I am inspired by the promontory landscape, but I don’t necessarily respond in a direct way. I’m much more interested in absorbing the colours, the moods and the feeling of being down there, away from the stresses of everyday life.

My progression into this phase of my practice has been organic (as explained elsewhere). I started pursuing my interests in space and landscape through texture, colour, shape and line.

Sometimes when I am staying at the “Prom”, I will do a small sketch of the mountains or the river, but I don’t put any pressure on myself to pursue it more seriously. I like to let it happen.

I particularly enjoy the sculptural forms of the granite boulders on the windswept beaches. The light is ever changing and I love going out early to capture the dawn light and reflections on tidal river.
